Preparing Outdoor Spaces for Imaginative & Risky Play

In this workshop we will explore the research on why unstructured outdoor play is critical for developing children’s social, emotional and cognitive strengths. We will review the research on how risky play emerges in children’s play, and the role of the teacher in the school context. Leave with practical and inspiring ideas for developing creative and imaginative spaces where children of all ages will engage in joyful play for hours, no matter the weather!

This session will focus on the concepts of “risky” play in the school context, and prepare participants for assessing risks, hazards, and benefits in their school yards and surrounding spaces. Resources will be shared to engage all the “yah, but” obstacles you may encounter!
